What Is PicoWay Laser Treatment?

PicoWay is an FDA-cleared picosecond laser system that treats pigmentation, acne scars, fine lines, and tattoos by delivering energy in pulses lasting a trillionth of a second. Rather than heating the skin the way older lasers do, PicoWay creates a photoacoustic, sound-wave effect that breaks pigment and ink into fragments your body clears naturally.
That mechanical approach means less heat reaches the surrounding tissue, which is part of why PicoWay is associated with a lower risk of pigment complications and a shorter recovery than many older laser systems.

Who PicoWay Laser May Help

PicoWay is appropriate for a range of skin concerns and skin tones. You may be a good candidate if you have:

How Does PicoWay’s Advanced Picosecond Technology Work?

PicoWay’s picosecond pulses, about a trillionth of a second each, hit pigment and ink particles fast enough to create a photoacoustic effect rather than a thermal one. That shockwave shatters the target into fragments small enough for the body to break down and clear on its own.

For acne scars and fine lines, the PicoWay Resolve handpiece works differently. It creates tiny channels beneath the surface of the skin that trigger new collagen and elastin production, without disrupting the outer layer of skin.

Your Care Begins With A Conversation

Dr. Hayag

Dr. Marie V. Hayag

Dr. Hayag

PicoWay is a precise treatment, and the results you experience will reflect the skill of the provider applying it. At Marie Hayag MD, Dr. Hayag takes a physician-led approach to every session, building personalized plans based on your skin tone, your specific concern, and your goals.

She doesn’t treat pigmentation, scarring, or tattoo removal as one-size-fits-all concerns. For many patients, PicoWay fits into a broader skin health plan that may include chemical peels or other lasers, depending on what makes the most sense for the patient.

“The right approach depends on your skin, not a standard protocol.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PicoWay laser treatment right for me?

PicoWay works well for patients dealing with pigmentation, acne scars, fine lines, or unwanted tattoos, especially those who have been told their skin tone makes other lasers risky. A consultation with Dr. Hayag determines which handpiece and settings fit your skin and your goals.

Most patients describe a mild snapping sensation rather than significant pain. Tattoo removal tends to be the most uncomfortable of the PicoWay treatments, while pigment and acne scar treatments are generally well tolerated without anesthesia.

Many patients notice an improvement in tone and texture after the first session, though full results depend on the condition being treated. Pigment and tattoo treatments typically require a series of sessions spaced several weeks apart.

Downtime is minimal for most PicoWay treatments, and patients can typically resume daily activities the same day. Tattoo removal is the exception. The treated area needs to stay covered and protected for a few days while it heals.

Every PicoWay treatment is performed within a physician-led dermatology practice, not a high-volume medspa. Dr. Hayag evaluates your Fitzpatrick skin type, medical history, and treatment goals before selecting the wavelength, handpiece, and energy settings best suited to your skin.

Yes. PicoWay is often paired with treatments such as such as XERF, Fraxel, Clear and Brilliant or chemical peels to address multiple concerns in one care plan. Dr. Hayag will recommend a sequence and timeline based on your skin and your goals.
